NEWSLETTER                                                                      Winter 2009

Greetings Brother Knights!  As the fraternal year moves into the busy season of activities and programs, volunteering your time is a good way to help your council assist other people and organizations that are struggling with tough economic times.  I would like to encourage every member to help us meet our membership quota of 35 new members this year.  Ask a family member or friend to consider joining the K of C.  Membership is the life blood for the future of this council.  We have scheduled a 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree for March 7, 2010.  I would like to share with you a message from our State Deputy, Paul Upman.  His motto is “Strong in Faith & Service” which makes a strong statement that true Knights are extraordinary men.  He states that too many Catholic men are just going through motions with their faith and that the men who are Knights are out in front with their words, deeds, and actions and believes united with other Knights we are indeed better Catholics than if we would be striving alone and that we are more sensitive to others and more prayerful.  I hope you have a safe and happy holiday season with your family & friends.  Your Grand Knight, Jeff Cox

It’s time once again to collect dues for 2010!  Dues are due January 1, 2010.  Bills for 2010 dues will be processed shortly after November 1 and will be ready by the Family Christmas Breakfast on December 20.  We have approximately 900 due paying members with a good number of them paying at the breakfast.  Thank you to those of you who come out to the breakfast and pay your dues.  It makes my job a little easier!  All remaining bills will be mailed shortly after December 21.  It saves the council money by paying at the party and you get to enjoy a great meal and fellowship with your Brother Knights and their families!  If there are any questions regarding the status of your dues please call me at 419-538-7172.  If you pay cash at any other time, please make sure you get a paper receipt and that some sort of receipt is placed with your money so that proper credit may be given to your account.  Sometimes this does not happen and I have to remedy the situation.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation!  Your Financial Secretary, James F. Ellerbrock

Bingo is held every Monday night unless the hall is rented for a banquet or polka dance.  Early Bird starts at 6:30 p.m. and Regular Bingo starts at 7:30 p.m.  It seems 2009 has been a good Bingo year!  Back in January we started selling Instant Bingo Tickets not only at Bingo but at other functions throughout the year.  Regular Bingo is going strong with an average of 100 players a night.  I want to thank all of the volunteers who help make this possible.  It takes a lot of work but the benefits are great!   Come out  and play and help the Knights of Columbus support local churches and other charitable organizations.

On September 30, U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance including the words “under God” did not violate the Constitution and dismissed the case.  His reason was it enacted to enhance instruction in the nations history and foster a sense of patriotism.  The Knights of Columbus were directly involved with dismissal of this case.

Thank you to all who volunteer their time, talents and treasures as well as those who come out to support the K of C!  We couldn’t do it without you!

Nursing Home Ministry Program – Is Jesus calling you to be His eyes, His ears, His hands, and His heart to someone in a nursing home? Studies indicate that one out of four people will need nursing home care before they die!  We are looking for volunteers that would like to help with visiting nursing homes in the area.  These volunteers would help the residents by talking, listening, playing cards, reading the paper, or just being there for them.  If interested please contact Harold Gerten at 419-659-5914 or come to a meeting and talk to Harold to find out more details.  If you think you could share some of your time and talents to make someone else’s life more enjoyable, please contact one of the individual nursing home points of contact on the reverse side for more details on this rewarding program.
